Current situation of ASF in Europe

Last week to new outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) have been detected in 2 European countries: Bulgaria and Slovakia.

Recently, on July 23rd, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) confirmed the presence of a new ASF focus on a pig farm with 17,000 susceptible animals, located near the border with Romania.

On July 25th, the OIE/WOAH informed of the emergence, for the first time, of ASF in Slovakia, after a confirmed case of a pig from a backyard located near the border with Hungary (a country already affected by the disease since last June).
The global pattern of distribution of ASF in this period reveals a serious spread of the disease, mainly in Europe, and in Asia, after the first occurrence in China in 2018.
The European Union has laid down prevention and control measures to be applied where African swine fever is suspected or confirmed either in holdings or in wild boars, with the aim of preventing more spreads in order to erradicate the disease.
